VPMA and BVNA join forces to call for Petplan Veterinary Award Nominations

The Veterinary Practice Management Association (VPMA) has once again joined the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) in calling for nominations for managers and nurses to the Petplan Veterinary Awards which take place in April 2015. Following their appeal last year there was a rise in nominations for both nurses and managers and the association presidents were keen to build on that momentum. In a reciprocal arrangement, BVNA is calling upon its members to nominate their practice managers, and VPMA is calling for nurse nominations.

Top Ten Essentials to Keep you Legal and Compliant

With health and safety legislation regularly changing it can be hard to keep up. If you have been newly charged with overseeing H&S in your practice, where do you start?

This course will offer a practical update, refresher or introduction to current H&S requirements and legislation, including radiation, waste regulation, COSHH and Risk Assessments, fire safety, staff safety protocols and medicine legislation compliance.  SPVS and VPMA in partnership with Zoetis will be running this course on 24th September in Surrey.

The day will include a practical workshop in completing Risk Assessments and a question and answer session in which Nigel Lea and Samantha Deakin from Citation will share the most commonly asked questions to their helpline.  Carolyne Crowe from Carolyne Crowe Coaching takes you through your legal responsibility to ensure your staff are not stressed at work. What constitutes work related stress, how to spot it, and what you can do to avoid the negative consequences. There will also be a practical demonstration on fire safety, tailored to vet practice, with the chance to try out fire extinguishers and fire blankets and you will receive a separate fire safety certificate.  You will leave knowing what you need to know and what you need to do to ensure your practice is legal and compliant.

Anyone new to H&S or feeling in need of a refresher should attend this day.

The day will start at 10:00 and finish at 4:30.  CPD certificates, fire safety certificates, lunch and refreshments are included.  The course costs £180 for SPVS/VPMA members (or £255 for non-members).

Dr Mark Patteson, Specialist in Cardiology, Paddy Mannion, Specialist in Imaging and Peter Southerden, European Specialist in Veterinary Dentistry will head up the list of speakers at SPVS/VPMA Focus on Diagnostics Day on 16th October in Daventry.   The theme for the day will be the business and clinical case for doing more ‘in-house’.

‘The best day’s CPD I’ve been to in 10 years’ was the verdict of one attendee to last year’s event and this was echoed by other delegates, a mix of practice owners, managers and clinical directors.

Other seminar subjects include the business and ethical case for laproscopic spays, regenerative medicine and how to make the most of your microscope and digital x-ray.  Brian Faulkner will chair workshops and present a seminar on dashboards and income analysis.

The day is also an excellent opportunity to talk to suppliers of equipment with over 20 relevant and focused exhibitors

The day, held at Staverton Park, Daventry, starts at 10:00am and finishes at 5:00pm.  CPD certificates, lunch and refreshments are included.  The cost is just £100 for SPVS/VPMA members (£150 for non-members).

Can you manage conflict?

spvs vpma logo

Managing conflict in the workplace can be one of the biggest challenges a manager faces.  This might be conflict directed at you from a colleague or client, or conflict between two members of staff.  SPVS and VPMA in partnership with Zoetis will be running two courses on conflict management, the first in Birmingham on 9th July and the second in Preston on 23rd July.
Course leader, Nick Steele, National Consulting Manager with Zoetis, will teach simple techniques starting with how to listen to the angry person and work backwards to the source of the anger.   Once these techniques have been learnt they can be applied to managing difficult situations with clients OR with colleagues.
Delegates will leave with the tools to help them tackle difficult situations together with simple tips to help train the reception team.
The day will include role play and case study scenarios together with interactive sessions to share experiences among delegates.
Both days will start at 10:00 and finish at 4:30.  CPD certificates, lunch and refreshments are included.  The course costs £180 for SPVS/VPMA members (or £255 for non-members) and BVNA members will be offered SPVS/VPMA membership rates
For further details, or to register for the event, visit www.spvs-vpma-events.co.uk  or call 01453 872 731.
